Information Session: Dane County Department of Waste & Renewables - Sustainability Campus and Composting Updates and Requests for Information Overview | Jan 30, 2025 | 12:00 - 1:00 | Zoom | REGISTER

With less than six years of landfill space remaining at the current Dane County Landfill, the County has a transformative opportunity to move the region towards a circular economy. The County’s vision for the next landfill site includes the development of a Sustainability Campus, dedicated to diverting waste by hosting reuse, repair, and recycling businesses; new waste management technologies; and research and education opportunities. To accomplish this vision, Dane County has designated approximately 30 acres of land on the Southeast side of Madison to house sustainability initiatives. Now, Dane County is requesting information from businesses, entities, individuals and organizations interested in establishing activities on the site.

On January 14th, Dane County will have issued four separate requests for information (RFIs) for potential partners across the following categories: large-scale waste diversion; diversion of bulky and hard-to-recycle materials; reuse and retail operations; and research, education and creative fields. Interested attendees are encouraged to respond to the RFIs and distribute them further to potentially interested parties. Organics such as food scraps are one of the largest waste streams entering the Dane County landfill, at over one-third of all incoming materials.

To advance Dane County’s landfill diversion goals, the Department of Waste & Renewables will be expanding its organic material recycling programs. Commercial food scrap collection services will begin in February 2025, with residential drop-off options becoming available in Summer 2025. Qualifying organizations may also apply for the Department’s Organic Management Grant program, to support their organic materials landfill diversion efforts.
